Kids – pay attention. Janine was one of my Besties in 9th grade. She’s the reason I have had “big hair” My whole life. I didn’t have sisters, or close family to show me how to do makeup and hair, so she showed me how to flip upside down when I was blow-drying it to make it “fluffy” We’d experiment with our hair and makeup and go hang out at the park, or the mall, or Red Rocks. One day her and another girl -asked if I wanted to skip school, and go up to red rocks. I don’t remember how they met the guy who was taking them, but I had a REALLY bad feeling about it. Not to mention I wasn’t in the mood to be grounded for a month, or explain to my parents why I decided to do something so stupid. I declined. I got A LOT of grief over it, but I declined anyway. Later that night I found out that they were in a terrible car accident and Janine was in a coma. The other girl had a broken leg, but was in far better shape. Dozens of us held vigil outside her hospital room, and for months there was little progress. She did eventually wake up, but she was changed. She had a severe brain injury and even though she was still Janine in there somewhere – it had altered her personality. She also had to learn to walk again and I would imagine was in a lot of pain. We drifted apart becuse at 16 I just didn’t know how to be there for her anymore. I will regret that for the rest of my life. She turned to drugs, she turned to prostitution and a very dark way of life in the years following. ON June 12th, 2009 they found the dismembered remains of a woman in an apple orchard in Glenwood Springs. It was Janine. It’s still an unsolved murder. Please, Please kids. Remember ONE wrong decision could change your life forever. The decision to ditch class and go to a park and hang out instead of staying where she should have been ended horrifically in an apple orchard one spring day. THINK before you do.
