Circumstances

John Anthony Gilardo was last seen in San Diego, California sometime during 1995. He kept in regular phone contact with his sister. And she attempted to report him missing after he stopped calling her. When she told the police Gilardo took frequent trips to Mexico, they assumed he’d left of his own accord and refused to accept a report.

Gilardo’s sister wasn’t able to file a missing persons report until July 201. That was seventeen years after she last heard from her brother. Few details are available in his case.

Opinion

This is one case in which I believe the system outright failed a missing person and his family. John Anthony Gilardo has been missing for 23 years. And, even now, he is not considered an endangered missing person? For 17 years, police refused to even investigate his disappearance or treat it as such. I don’t like to criticize the authorities but in this case, someone dropped the ball. It is too late to change things. But this family do need answers. And if “few details are available” in a missing person’s case, shouldn’t they be given the benefit of the doubt and not assumed to be in no danger? Doesn’t Gilardo deserve better? How about his family?
