Circumstances

Ilonka Cann was last seen at her home in Huntington Mills, Pennsylvania. She was last seen on May 26, 1970. Her husband of two years, Charles Cann II, saw her at 7:20 A.M. before he went to his teaching job at the Berwick Junior High School. When he returned home at 3:30 P.M., Ilonka was gone. And the couple’s fifteen-month-old son was alone in the house, crying in his crib upstairs. She has never been heard from again. Charles reported her missing the next day. An extensive search of the area, including a dive team checking a nearby pond, turned up no indication of Ilonka’s whereabouts.

Husband Gets A Divorce

In 1971, the year after Ilonka’s disappearance, Charles began seeing another woman. Her name is Grace P. Brown. Grace moved into the home he’d formerly shared with Ilonka. And she took Charles’s last name. Then the couple lived together until 1987. This is without Charles ever filing for divorce from Ilonka or trying to have her declared legally dead. In 1987, Grace filed for divorce, saying her cohabitation with Charles made him her common-law husband. Charles claimed they had never been legally married. And he was still married to Ilonka; Grace said they were presumed married in 1972.

The Other Woman’s Common-Law Marriage

Ultimately, the court ruled that Grace and Charles had entered into a common-law marriage. The court ruled this on June 1, 1982. Also, they ruled that Grace could proceed with her divorce action. The divorce was granted in 1990. Charles appealed, and the appeals court ruled that, even though he had never tried to have her declared legally dead, Ilonka was presumed deceased. This was as of 1977. Ilonka was presumed deceased seven years after her disappearance. There has been no indication of Ilonka’s whereabouts since she went missing. And the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are said to be unclear.

Appeal

Ilonka Cann has been missing for over 47 years. This adds up to over twice the years that she was seen alive. And, after all this time, Ilonka is still not considered endangered? Agencies still consider her as missing under unclear circumstances? This is perplexing. Common sense alone should tell us that something happened to Ilonka Cann. And whatever it was, we can presume that it was not good. No sane person would stay missing for 47 years. It is unlikely that Ilonka would have willingly deserted her baby, certainly not for this long. Someone (s) knows something! Ilonka’s son is well into his adulthood and may be around 48 or 49 years old by now. This mom’s family deserves answers after 47 awful years of agony!

Do you have any information concerning the whereabouts of Ilonka Cann? Do you have any information concerning the person (s) responsible for her disappearance? If you have any information, please contact the Pennsylvania State Police (570) 542-4117 or 9-1-1 or your
local police.

  1. I was in high school when Ilonka disappeared. I remember a student in one of my classes told me that she lived near Ilonka and one night Ilonka came running over to this student’s house, barefooted, through the woods, because her husband had been beating her and she was afraid of him. I think either he, or his father, killed Ilonka either accidentally or on purpose. To this day I understand the baby has always been told by his father that his mother left them. May God bring closure to this mystery. I shared what I remembered to someone who was investigating several years ago, but the person (student) said they didn’t remember anything. I believe they may have been afraid to say anything because of possible retribution from Charles Cann who is known to be threatening.
