Circumstances

Cheryl Ann Kenney was last seen at her job. She worked at the Quality Convenience Store. It was located on Business 71 Highway in Nevada,
Missouri. Cheryl was last seen on the evening of February 27, 1991. She usually worked until midnight. But it was a slow night and she evidently decided to close the store early. Her time card shows she clocked out of work at 10:00 P.M. And she set the store alarm at 10:17. She never arrived home and has never been heard from again. Her white Chevrolet was later found abandoned in the store parking lot. The store’s janitor left a few minutes before Kenney closed up. He stated there weren’t any customers’ cars in the parking lot when he left. But there was a unidentified male customer inside the store whom he didn’t recognize.

Investigation

Walk-in customers weren’t unusual. At the time, there were several hotels within walking distance. The customer hasn’t been identified and it’s unclear whether this unidentified male had anything to do with Kenney’s disappearance. Because Kenney closed the store before she disappeared, it’s unlikely there was anyone still inside the store when she left. It would have been against policy for her to have let anyone in after closing. Two witnesses in the area reported hearing a woman scream right around the time Kenney would have gone out to her car. The witnesses didn’t go to the police until several days later, after they read about her disappearance in the newspapers.

Theories

Authorities initially thought Cheryl Ann Kenney could have left of her own accord. For her mother had recently died and she was upset about it. However, she was only carrying about $6 when she disappeared. And it would be uncharacteristic of her to abandon her husband, her two children and her father. At the time of her disappearance, her father was ill. Kenney’s case may be linked to two other Missouri women. Angela Hammond was abducted from a convenience store parking lot on April 4, 1991. And she was never heard from again. Trudy Darby, a convenience store worker in Macks Creek, was abducted from her workplace on January 19, 1991, six weeks prior to Hammond’s disappearance. The store was found robbed of $220 afterwards.

Darby’s nude body was found in the Little Niangua River two days later; she had been shot twice in the head. Half-brothers Jesse Rush and Marvin Chaney were later convicted of the robbery and Darby’s rape and murder.

There are similarities between Darby’s murder, Hammond’s abduction and Kenney’s disappearance, but there is no hard evidence to link the cases. Kenney’s disappearance remains unsolved.

Other Facts

According to Carole Sue Sheppard, there are additional facts about this case we needs to be aware of. She states that Cheryl Ann Kenney’s son was 10 years old at the time of her disappearance. He states she was being stalked and harassed by a MHP (unsure what this refers to) at the time of her disappearance. This individual was well known to have many girlfriends and was also married. CHeryl had just bought a car and she had the only key and yet her estranged husband drove the car away the next day. In fact, it was three days before the local police investigated her disappearance. Cheryl’s car had a motorcycle helmet. It had been left in the back seat. However, none of her friends or family rode and none had any idea where it came from.

More Additional Facts

According to Carole Sue Sheppard, two workers from a nearby factory heard screams. They heard the screams at the approximate time of her disappearance. But they thought it was coming from a nearby tavern. The MHP has given lots of conflicting stories about the remains found SE of town. So, she she says, no one believes them anymore. The person who found the remains died in a suspicious suicide a few years later. The LEO who was stalking her was involved in the investigation of the remains as well as her initial disappearance. So should all evidence be suspect? Sheppard says, as for the motorcycle helmet, the husband and his best friend both rode motorcycles. And on the night of the disappearance the husband rode the motorcycle to town to check on her.

Appeal

Cheryl Ann Kenney has been missing for over 27 years. It is unfortunate that her disappearance was treated as a voluntary disappearance when she at first vanished. This tends too much to happen when there is no evidence of foul play. Would suspecting foul play from the beginning have made a difference in the investigation? This will never be known. But Cheryl’s children and family know that she would never voluntarily walk away from her life and them. She apparently enjoyed close relations with her family before she vanished. They have gone through more than 27 years with no answers. Police have not yet named a suspect or even a person of interest. It’s time for this to become something other than a cold case.
