People with mental illnesses are terribly stigmatized. It seems the word comes up whenever violent crimes are committed. On a Facebook post about a missing man said to have mental health issues, one person commented, “Is he dangerous?” Another commenter suggested checking an area in local school where an alleged attack took place. A third said. “Oh no! My niece goes to that school.” Can the stigma of mental illness affect missing persons searches? I fear it does that.
